It was just another Sunday afternoon. It’s a day that’s usually made up of church in the morning, near-nothingness in the afternoon, and a leisurely dinner with family or friends at night. I fast from email, social media and All Things Internet. I sit on the floor at play Hotwheels and Legos and trains with my boys. I skim through magazines. I read books. Sometimes, I even plan meals for the week.
The bottom line is that we rest, we feast, we play.
That day, O Magazine put out a call for influencers. I tore the page out of the magazine and haphazardly applied the next day. It was one of those “Why not?” moments – a moment that didn’t take much thought, a moment I believed I’d never see or hear from again. It was a softball thrown into the cyberspace outfield. Selfishly, I wondered if gaining an “in” to the group might garner an “in” to writing for the magazine someday, to help me meet other editors and writers in the publishing industry.
You can probably guess what happens next.
A month or two later, forgetting I’d filled out an online application, I received an email: out of thousands of submissions, I was chosen as one of fifty O Mag Insiders.
And really, this only means one thing: although she doesn’t know it yet, Oprah and I are quickly on our way to becoming besties. She is, admittedly, still a little hesitant about our friendship:
But that’s okay. I will win her over. I know Gayle can’t be replaced, but surely – surely – the queen of media can make room in her heart for me.
And when that happens, I’m sure she’ll be all smiles, putting her hands in the air whilst donning her fur coat, cheering on our newfound friendship:
But, in the meantime, you might begin to see an occasional product review here on the blog, courtesy of my role within the group. You might stumble upon a giveaway prize pack, courtesy of O Magazine. And occasionally, you might even come to see an (exquisitely photoshopped) picture of Oprah and me – you’ll then know that our Best Friends Forever relationship has officially commenced.
The bottom line is that you won’t see that much of a change, but when a product is featured or an article linked, I covet your support!
Otherwise, I’d love to introduce you to some of the other women in the inner circle: Stacie is a make-up obsessed mom who loves it when women support each other. Amy truly believes we are stronger together. Claudia, who calls herself a trendy Latina, credits Oprah with her growth as a woman, a mom and an entrepreneur. Maria, a hyperhidrosis survivor, hopes her sweaty palms will take center stage. Sarah, a self-described caffeinated mom, blogger, pre-life female, university staff member, hapa, and Korean adoptee, can’t wait for this year of adventure. And finally, Shelley, LaTonya and Meghan all have their own stories to tell about their invitation into the #OMagInsiders crew.
So, ready, set, go – here goes nothing!
Have you ever had one of those “Why not?” moments, when you thought you didn’t think you had a chance …but it turns out you DID? Otherwise, why are YOU a fan of Oprah and her iconic magazine?
