Well, here we are: 2015 is behind us and I find myself glad that I finished a small bucket of Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food Ice Cream the other night so I say with confidence that 2016 has most definitely been a year of health. (I also just secured a FitDesk on Craig’s List for pick-up in the morning, so one might say I’m on a most legitimate track toward healthy good tidings and great joy. Boom).
But I digress.
If you’ve been around for any length of time, you know that Tuesdays are dedicated to outside voices. Each year we look at a different theme, and a great gaggle of writers brings you a great gaggle of various perspectives. Even though guest posting will look different this year (which you can come back and check out this coming Tuesday), I can honestly say that this year’s theme has changed me. Because, rituals: those not-so-boring rituals really do make the story deeper.
It started with living room dance parties, a ritual the HBH (Hot Black Husband), Cancan, Frodo and I try our hardest to institute most every night of the week. But then it grew: it grew to sunsets and coffee pots and babies jumping into their mama’s beds. It grew to quiet mornings alone and words shouted at the start of every day and tray table dinners. And if you’re anything like me, it’s caused me to look at the big and little details in my life to look for the strings and threads and pieces of fabric that weave it all together.
For this life we’re living – we’re being you and me and all the humans that inhabit this grand earth – is anything but boring, even if our lives feel small and insular sometimes.
So, join me, will you? Take a trip down memory lane to this past year’s top ten #rituals posts …and then, do consider writing for our community in the coming year!
10. The Couch (Kaitlin Jenkins). Otherwise known as “When My Cousin Teaches Me How I Can be a Better Wifey.”
9. Examen (Ed Cyzewski). Humor and holiness: that’s Ed to me, y’all. Take this opening line, and then add a dose of God and you’ve got yourself one hell of a storyteller: “When it comes to dieting, my only response to the question, “Do you want a donut?” is “YES!””
5. Counting the Good (Bri Amarillis). Truth be told, I totally stole this one. We were having a tough time with Cancan, so we started counting his fingers every night …and he couldn’t get enough of it. It was magical and special, perfect and just what our boy needed. True story.
And the number one #rituals guest post of the past year is…
1. Paying Attention to the Sinking Sun (Micha Boyett). The last two lines bring it all home for me: “Because miracles aren’t necessarily meant to be understood. Sometimes they’re just meant to be noticed.” Ain’t that the truth. (And, read Micha’s book if you haven’t, y’all: Found).
What a year! Don’t forget to check back on Tuesday for new guest post guidelines, otherwise, what are some of your favorite #rituals memories from this past year?
