This is one of my oldest friends from Keizer, OR 97303…she’s kind of a big deal:
I met Ranada my junior year of high school when she was student teaching at my alma mater; she also happened to be involved with Young Life at the time, so I quickly latched onto her and made her hang out with me all the stinking time. I’d show up at her apartment and we’d bake cookies and watch movies and do other grown-up things like that, upon which she once made a promise to take me to Reno for my 21st birthday. And did Reno happen? Oh yes it did. Between trips to CalNeva, the slot machines alike and shows alike, we lived it up with our accompanying college best friends and had quite the memorable time. But this too is not the point of the story: eventually Ranada bought her own house (two blocks away from my parents’ – whee!), continued in the education system, tackled life with all of its ups and downs, and became a friend I looked forward to seeing upon visits back home. And really, if I’m honest, she was also a huge reason why I went into education in the first place, teaching high school English (…just like her!) and then following my heart with Young Life.
So this brings us to why she’s kind of a big deal. I admire people who not only do what they were made to do (vocationally-speaking), but who follow their heart – and that is Ranada to a “t.” Ranada is a natural-born teacher, but along the way she also picked up this extreme passion for knitting. And look at how she combined those two passions:

People, get her autograph now, as she’s going to be one of those people who has a movie filmed about them (complete with the John Legend scene, I’m sure). Ranada, I am SO, so very proud of you! Thank you for being an inspiration to many.
So, do yourself a favor: be a Ranada today. Think about what you were made to do, and do it. And listen to and follow your heart – what did you find? If you could drop it all today, what would you do with your work hours?
